A training program on “Satellite‐Derived Agrometeorological Data for AFSIS’s Rice Growing Outlook (RGO)” for Agriculture Management in the ASEAN was held on 11 July 2022, under the partnership of ISRO/JAXA/GISTDA. The training program aimed to provide participants with knowledge and skills on how to use satellite-derived agrometeorological data to improve agriculture management in ASEAN countries.

The event was attended by 26 statisticians from eight ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. ISRO showcased the Meteorological & Oceanographic Satellite Data Archival Centre (MOSDAC) and the Visualisation of Earth Observation Data and Archival System (VEDAS) system and provided training sessions on using the VEDAS platform. The program was deemed a great success, and trainees gained valuable insights on using Indian satellite-derived agrometeorological information through the MOSDAC and VEDAS systems.

The training program was part of a larger effort by ISRO/JAXA/GISTDA to improve the capabilities of satellite-based products in solving common problems in agricultural information systems. The program emphasised the importance of utilising satellite-derived agrometeorological data to improve agriculture management in ASEAN countries. By providing training and knowledge on the use of MOSDAC and VEDAS systems, the program aimed to enhance the trainees’ skills in generating AFSIS’s RGO report and to support the growth and development of the agricultural sector in the region.

The success of the training program highlights the effectiveness of the partnership between ISRO/JAXA/GISTDA and the importance of cooperation in advancing the use of satellite technology in agriculture management. The training program has provided an opportunity for ASEAN countries to improve their capabilities in utilising satellite-derived data for agriculture management and is expected to lead to significant improvements in the region’s agricultural sector.
